These types of websites function in different ways.  Some may have you click a link and each click earns a few kibbles for homeless animals.  Some websites have you answer trivia questions to earn points towards some gift.  Many of these sites use corporate sponsors who will give the amount you earn to the organization in exchange for free advertising on the site.

The end result is that a little bit of your efforts does something good for the world and others.
